On ne connoissoit qu’une seule espèce de zoanthe, appelée actinia sociaia par Ellis qui l'a découverte, et hydra sociaia par Gmelin.
Étymologie
Du nom scientifique latin Zoantha du grec ancien ζῷον, zỗon (« animal ») et ἄνθος, ánthos (« fleur »). Le genre a été établi par Cuvier au XIXᵉ siècle.
