Étymologie. Du néerlandais jan-van-gent (« fou de Bassan ») ; voir aussi jean-le-blanc, janfrédéric. La graphie gand, jean-van-ghent vient d’un faux rapprochement avec Jean de Gand et Gand, Gent, Ghent) ; voir gent (« canard ») en néerlandais.
